Student-Led Agreements to Boost Responsibility, Motivation, and Follow-Through

A Behavior Contract is a written agreement—co-created by the learner, teacher, and family—that spells out expectations, rewards, and tracking steps. By letting students help set goals and choose incentives, contracts turn vague “try harder” requests into clear, motivating roadmaps that raise accountability at school and home.

Why use Behavior Contracts?

  • Higher task completion and on-time work. Research shows written, signed agreements paired with self-monitoring can lift assignment completion rates by 30 – 50 %.
  • Reduced challenging behaviors. Clearly outlined expectations and consistent rewards decrease off-task and disruptive incidents, especially for learners with ADHD or executive-function challenges.
  • Stronger self-management skills. Regular progress checks teach learners to review goals, evaluate effort, and adjust strategies—skills that carry over to future academic and life tasks.
