Fading

Prompt-Fading Techniques to Build True Independence

Fading—also called prompt fading—is the ABA method of gradually reducing assistance so learners perform skills on their own. By moving from full physical or verbal prompts to subtle gestures—or none at all—BCBAs, special-education teachers, and parents make hand-washing, reading, or job tasks stick without lifelong dependence on adult cues.

Why use Fading?

  • Faster, more durable skill mastery. Research shows prompt-fading schedules lead to higher accuracy and longer retention than leaving full prompts in place.
  • Reduced prompt dependency. Systematically thinning help prevents learners from waiting for adults and boosts self-initiation.
  • Improved generalization. Skills practiced with fading transfer better to new settings and people because they rely on the learner’s own cues, not a specific teacher’s prompts.
