Reinforcer Pairing for Rapid Rapport and Instructional Control

Pairing—also called reinforcer pairing in ABA—links your presence with the learner’s favorite toys, activities, and sensory experiences, creating a “happy, relaxed, and engaged” foundation for instruction. By spending short, no-demand sessions joining in what the learner already loves, teachers, BCBAs, and parents become trusted, positive partners, making later skill-building smoother and more effective.

Why use Pairing?

• Higher cooperation and faster learning. Studies show learners comply with new instructions up to 70 % more often when the adult has first paired as a source of reinforcement.
• Reduced escape and challenging behavior. Positive association with the instructor lowers anxiety and decreases refusal, aggression, and other escape-maintained behaviors.
