Problem-Solving

Step-by-Step Solution-Finding for Everyday Challenges

Problem Solving is an ABA-aligned strategy that* teaches autistic and other neurodivergent learners to navigate setbacks independently—whether they’ve run out of notebook paper or need help handling peer conflict.* By walking through a clear, repeatable sequence (“Define the problem, brainstorm options, pick a plan, test, and review”), teachers, BCBAs, and parents build the executive-function skills that drive independence at school, home, and in the community.

Why use Problem Solving?

  • Stronger executive functioning. Explicit instruction in solution-generation and decision-making improves planning, flexibility, and self-monitoring—skills closely linked to academic success.
  • Fewer escalation cycles. Learners who can identify and address obstacles show significant drops in frustration-based behaviors and quicker returns to on-task work.
  • High generalization across contexts. Practicing the same five-step routine for both “small” and “big” problems increases carryover to new settings and novel challenges.
